"MIND-SET TO ATTRACT SUCCESS

2/7/2022

Imagine this – You walk into a Chamber of Commerce networking luncheon and quickly scan the room to see who is there and find a place to sit.  Some people attract you and others seem to deter you.  You make some conscious choices while others are more subtle and automatic, or unconscious.  What kinds of people attract you, and why?  What kind of energy do YOU radiate?  Are you attracting or repelling success?  If you were in a lineup with 10 other people in your field, what would attract people to you?  What would drive them away?

“In mastery, there is a sense of effortlessness and joyousness.  It stems from your ability and willingness to understand and work with the forces around you.”  Art Kleiner (The Fifth Discipline Fieldbook)

Success is a HABIT!  You gain personal mastery by being passionate about your vision, while maintaining a clear and realistic picture of the current situation.  You can make personal mastery a HABIT.  All habits are formed through “Intention”, “Commitment” and “Repetition”.

FIRST:
Decide on a Goal/Vision.  This is your INTENTION.
SECOND:
Get PASSIONATE (Your unconscious only gets as involved and excited as YOU are!)
THIRD:
Practice “Re-framing” every negative (problem) into a positive (opportunity).

FORTH:
Consistently REPEAT the thoughts and behaviors that match your goal until they are second nature (habitual).

When confronted with a challenging situation, pause and take a deep breath to release tension and re-focus.  Assess the situation while keeping your vision in mind.  In this moment, NOW, you have your power to make appropriate choices and recognize opportunities based on your goals for the future.  Do this consistently and in 4-6 weeks you’ll create the habit of success.

You are the architect of your life and move in the direction of your most dominant thought.  So, what do you think about most of the day?  Are you focused on what you WANT – called positive expectation, or are you focused on possible outcomes that you DON’T WANT – called worrying?   If you focus on “positive goals”, “possibilities” and “opportunities”, that’s what you attract.  If you focus on “the tanking economy”, “not enough business/money”, “problems”, you literally create more of the same.  They both take the same amount of time and energy, and both recruit your powerful unconscious processes equally.  You choose by what you think.

If you’ve formed the habit of “Lack” or “Limiting” thinking, notice the results and know that your mind is working perfectly!  If you want different results, simply change the direction of your thoughts - your antennae.  Just change the station.

MIND RADAR

INCOMING NEGATIVITY -  AVOID IT or TURN IT OFF
If you can’t change it, learn from it and move on!

INCOMING POSITIVITY - LOOK FOR IT & EXPECT IT
Set your mental radar to search for positive opportunities, people & environments

If you aren’t passionate about your goals, get NEW GOALS.  If your job/career doesn’t excite you, find something DIFFERENT.  You will be GREAT at what you LOVE to do, I guarantee it!  And remember:

NO SUBSTITUTE FOR HANDS-ON HYPNOSIS TRAINING!

NO SUBSTITUTE FOR HANDS-ON HYPNOSIS TRAINING!

By:  Patricia V. Scott, Ph.D. – President, UP Hypnosis Institute

In the age of interactive on-line video training, why do I still believe there is “No substitute for hands-on hypnosis training”?  My most credible evidence is what I hear from people in this field and those who come to my classes who have only had on-line training.  They instinctively know that there is something missing and they don’t seem to have the confidence level in working with their clients that people who attend “Live” trainings have.

I remember that it took me a long time to develop confidence working with clients in the beginning.  First, I had only hypnotized a few other students during my initial training.  Then, it took a while to build up my practice and I wasn’t seeing enough clients right away to build my confidence and keep my skills sharp.  I did sign up for every hypnosis & NLP class I could find, but I was still working primarily with other students.

The six-weekend Hypnosis Certification training that I have developed over my 25+ years in this field includes not only one-on-one practice sessions between students, but also private practice sessions with the public.  Shortly after I became a Certified Master Trainer, I decided to do an experiment with my hypnosis students.  On the third, fourth and fifth weekends of the training, I put out a call to my contact list asking for volunteers to work with the hypnosis students.  By the third weekend, the students had learned the basics and knew how to do the pre-talk, so I thought this would be a good way for them to practice.  The experiment payed off in ways I hadn’t anticipated.  Both the confidence level and competence level of each student went through the roof.  Even those in the training with prior counseling experience showed accelerated growth compared to past students.  And even though these were scripted practice sessions, the positive feedback from the practice clients was invaluable.

The other element about “live” training that I believe is irreplaceable is the personal interaction and comradery that happens during the course.  There is usually an interesting mix of professionals and people looking for self-development, which opens UP a wide array of conversational and educational Possibilities.  I know that some of my most valuable lessons in this field came about through personal interactions at trainings and conferences that were beyond the scope of the practical training.

We are more and more living a world of “virtual reality”.  There are even some new mental disorders in the DSM based on people lacking personal contact with others, and we can help these people with hypnosis.  I think it’s fantastic that we now have a plethora of on-line resources to supplement our knowledge and education; however, I believe now, more than ever before, there is “NO SUBSTITUTE FOR HANDS-ON HYPNOSIS TRAINING”.

HOW TO FIND A QUALIFIED HYPNOTIST

HOW DO YOU FIND A QUALIFIED HYPNOTIST/HYPNOTHERAPIST?
By:  Patricia V. Scott, Ph.D.
President of UP Hypnosis Institute, Tarpon Springs, Florida

Hypnosis is primarily a self-regulated industry.  The Council Of Professional Hypnosis Organizations (COPHO) is comprised of most major professional hypnosis organizations in the United States, representing over 12,000 professionals.  This organization sets educational minimum standards as well as standards of practice and ethics for practitioners and trainers in the industry.  UPHI (UP Hypnosis Institute) far exceeds the educational standards recommended by COPHO, and is a wonderful resource for locating qualified, professional hypnotists and hypnotherapists.  I have been in practice since 1992 and have the honor of knowing many practitioners all over the United States and abroad, and I often refer people to colleagues.

When looking for a hypnotist or hypnotherapist, it is important to be sure the person is a professional in full-time practice with adequate education and that you are comfortable with them.  Most practitioners, myself included, will do a free consultation with you where you can ask questions and find out if you are comfortable with them and with their approach.  There are many different styles of hypnosis, and each practitioner has a unique personality and approach.  If you are wanting to get help with a diagnosis (anything relating to a medical or mental health issue), you would need to have a written referral from the treating physician to see a hypnotherapist in the state of
Florida in accordance with Florida Statute 485.  This is true in most other states, as well.  That's because hypnotists are not licensed and do not diagnose, treat or prescribe.  If you are seeking help with a non-clinical behavioral or life goal issue, such as weight control, smoking cessation, improving your golf game, exam stress, etc., there is no referral necessary.

Questions to ask your potential hypnotist/hypnotherapist:

1.  Where and when did you get your Certification?
2.  What hypnosis organization(s) to you belong to?
3.  How many hours of continuing education do they require each year?
4.  How long have you been in full-time practice?
5.  Do you have expertise, training and experience in working with ______ (your issue)?
6.  Do you carry professional liability insurance?
7.  What other awards or specialty training have you received, if any?

Be aware that because the industry is largely self-regulated, pretty much anyone can create a fancy website, open an office, and say they are a hypnotist.  You want to find a practitioner with credentials and affiliations that show you they are an experienced professional.  Also, there are some professional hypnotists who work out of their home.  Although this does not mean they are less qualified, you will want to be sure to ask all of the questions above to ensure your safety and wellbeing.  I have always worked out of a professional office since I began my practice in 1992, as I felt this projected a professional image.  I also have always been a member of the Better Business Bureau with an A+ rating and have been associated with, and very active in, many Chambers of Commerce.  If you read my complete
BIO, you will find that I have been a featured presenter at many conferences and I have always been actively involved with civic organizations, charitable groups and professional business associations.  You want to be sure you are also looking at a hypnotist's other affiliations and memberships before making such an important decision.

Ultimately, the success you have with hypnosis is primarily dependent on your motivation and cooperation levels.  A skilled hypnotist is a guide who can assist you in accessing your own inner resources to achieve a goal you desire, to overcome an emotional or physical challenge, or eliminate an unwanted habit or behavior.

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

NLP - The Power of Change Language

NLP - The Power of Change Language
By:  Patricia V. Scott, Ph.D.

Can you remember a time when you heard someone speak with such precision, force and resonance that you have never forgotten their message?  Rudyard Kipling once said, “Words are the most powerful drug used by mankind.”  I remember hearing Mark Victor Hansen (co-author of the "Chicken Soup for the Soul" series) speak at an American Board of Hypnotherapy convention in the early 1990's.  I walked out of the room with about 400 other people, feeling like I was floating on a cloud several feet above the ground.  What was it about him, his words, his delivery, or his message that so touched me?  Thinking back, I get a feeling that tells me his message was much more powerful than the words he spoke.

How are you affected by the way in which you communicate with your own unconscious mind?  Do you always produce the result you want in your behaviors, your health, your performance, and your choices?  It is said that words are only 7% of our communication, with voice tonality being 38%, and body language making up the remaining 55%.  If the actual words you say are the least important element of your message, how can you be certain that you are conveying the intended message?  It is my belief and experience that the science of NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) holds the key to effective communication with self and others.

The meaning of the communication is in the response that you get!  This is one of the main teaching principles of NLP.  In “Frogs into Princes”, Richard Bandler and John Grinder (the originators of NLP) point out that you really only require three things to be an exquisite communicator:

1.      Know your desired outcome
2.      Be flexible in your behavior
3.      Have the sensory acuity to notice when you get the desired response

Most people have an idea of the outcome they want in any communication, whether it’s a sales presentation, a negotiation with a spouse, a job interview, or an internal dialogue for weight-loss.  Where they are lacking is in their flexibility to be able to generate enough different behaviors to elicit a variety of responses, or they have inadequate sensory acuity skills to recognize the meaning of the response.

The map is not the territory!  The words, images and ideas that we use to describe objects and experiences in life aren’t the actual objects or experiences.  They are our personal representation of those things, and vary from person to person based on how we communicate with our self.  This is sometimes where communication breaks down, because we assume that everyone perceives the world as we do.

You can change your history!  Even your very own past isn’t accurate in your memories.  It’s based on the state you were in at the time the event happened and changes with each episode of recall, colored by the state you are in every time you recall the memory.  With NLP you can learn to change your state on purpose and use various techniques to recall the event in that state, thereby changing your experience and emotions regarding the event.  Imagine a memory from your past that has always caused you anger, or fear, or any other negative emotion being transformed into a neutral memory that allows you to remain positive, powerful, and in control.

Sound fantastic?  It is not only fantastic, it is
transformational.  NLP offers powerful tools for personal change and growth, as well as therapeutic tools for anyone doing counseling or coaching.  It teaches how to model excellence, control emotions and states, and overcome resistance and blocks to success.  I have found NLP to be an indispensable tool in my hypnotherapy practice and it has propelled my personal and financial growth into new dimensions.

Placebo, Quackery, or True Healing?

PLACEBO, QUACKERY, OR TRUE HEALING?  By:  Patricia V. Scott

I was inspired to write this after reading some posted comments on an article about how medical schools are embracing alternative and complimentary methods.  One comment from someone who said he
“worked at Yale for two years” stated that U.S. medical schools have “sunk to administering quack treatment”, and his comments reflected the tunnel vision that I encounter from time to time in my practice when someone has adopted a limited belief system.  It takes very minimal investigation to discover the enormous benefits being experienced by people who are incorporating a more holistic approach to health and healing.  For over two decades health care professionals have been referring their patients to me as a way to incorporate mind-body techniques into their treatment protocol.  I help these people to get out of the medical, disease and symptom mind-set and into a positive, health and healing mind-set.  These people are regularly having dramatic, immediate and long-lasting positive results, and these results are duplicated by my students and colleagues all around the world.

So, is it simply a “placebo effect”?  Well, what would that mean?  It means the MIND has accepted a belief, or at least a possibility, and the BODY has acted on that thought.  If someone believes that every spring they are going to have allergy attacks and must take medicine to suppress the symptoms or else they will be miserable, then that is their experience.  I have worked with people who had that experience for many years and who changed the experience after one or two sessions.  Is that placebo or quackery?

Through all human history mankind has been attempting to figure out how to achieve and maintain perfect health.  I believe all of the answers are available and accessible from within each of us.  As long as I hold that belief, my clients seem to be able to discover all they need to get “unstuck”, to remove “energy blocks”, or whatever else you want to call it, and to achieve more peace and better health.  For those who need the scientific research to back this up, I have volumes that I use in my classes and it is easily found on the internet and in medical reference libraries on mind-body sciences, physics, psychology, cellular biology, and countless other areas of study.

Final thoughts:  If you begin your research from a frame of “what is possible”, and from a “results oriented” approach, you will most certainly find, as I have, that we are designed very efficiently to move toward health.  Sometimes we just have to
get out of the way.

How to make a Politician "BARK LIKE A DOG"

2/16/2016

A couple of weeks ago a man came to me for a consultation and after a few minutes started talking about politics and asked, "Would it be possible to get a politician, right in the middle of a speech, to just start barking like a dog?  Assuming he was joking, I explained to him the concept of covert hypnosis and how you can, for instance, engage a person's imagination into an interesting story, which puts a person into a light state of hypnosis, and covertly embed suggestions into the story that with a certain trigger, or in a certain situation, they will feel compelled to bark like a dog.

In order to illustrate this phenomenon, I told him a true story of an experience I had in the early 1990's.  I was having a long lunch with the late great hypnotist, Dr. Al Krasner, at the Radisson Hotel next to John Wayne Airport in Newport Beach, California, where they were hosting the annual convention of the American Board of Hypnotherapy.  There were several young men having lunch at a table nearby who weren't part of the convention, but they saw our nametags and began looking over and chuckling among themselves, obviously amused.  Finally, one of them turned to us (he must have drawn the straw), looked at Al and asked with a grin, "Can you make me bark like a dog?"

Without missing a beat, Dr. Krasner became very serious, put his fork down, looked right at the young man and asked,
"Well, I don't know.  You know there are many types of dogs and they don't all have the same kind of bark.  What kind of dog do you want to bark like?"  He then proceeded to engage the young man in a detailed question and answer session about the type, size, color and age of the dog he wants to bark like.  After drawing him into all of the details, he then said, "You know, I've never seen or heard of a dog quite like that, what does he sound like?"  Yes, you guessed, it.  The young man barked like a dog!  Then Dr. Krasner turned around, picked up his fork, and began eating as if nothing had happened.

After telling this story to the man in my office, he seemed very intrigued.  He said,
"You mean if you get someone involved with telling a story, you might be able to get them to bark like a dog as part of the story and they won't even realize how rediculous they look?"  Well, it's certainly possible.  But the person would have to really believe that it's integral to the story.  He thanked me and said he would call after he gets back from Reno.

The man left my office and I never thought anything else about it until yesterday when I saw a news story on a political channel and they showed a video of

Hillary Clinton giving a speech in Reno, Nevada, telling a story and barking like a dog!

OH MY, WHAT HAVE I DONE?

CAN YOU BE HYPNOTIZED?

1/30/2015

CAN YOU BE HYPNOTIZED?  As reported in PSYCHOLOGY TODAY” (Jan./Feb. 2001):   "Contrary to popular belief, practically everyone – about 95% of all people  can be hypnotized to some degree.  The only question is how far."

Have you ever driven a long distance and not remember a period of time?  Have you ever been involved in a good book and been unaware that someone had been speaking to you?  Have you ever become emotional while watching a movie?  Have you ever learned how to do something through repetition (walking, learning  your ABC's, driving a car, hitting a ball)?  Have you ever been in a class or seminar and found yourself daydreaming?  If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, then you have been hypnotized!  Actually, we drift in and out of the hypnotic brain wave state all throughout the day, and again as we drift off to sleep and as we awaken.  Some studies estimate that we are in a light "alpha" state up to 85% of the day!  So you see, you have been in hypnosis more than you realized.  Isn't it nice to know that you can learn to use this state, on purpose, to achieve positive changes in your behavior and in your health.  If you have already been "hypnotized" or "conditioned" into a behavior or habit that doesn't fit your current goals or desires, you can learn easy hypnotic techniques to re-program yourself, on purpose.

When you understand what hypnosis is, you come to understand it is a natural state of concentrated focused awareness which only requires a willingness to follow instructions by a skilled Hypnotherapist.  Unless someone is uncooperative, or has a severe mental disorder that renders them unable to understand and follow simple direction, they can learn to go into at least a light hypnotic state, and most people can be trained to enter deeper states with practice.  The usual reason someone feels they “can’t be hypnotized” is because of a false impression of what hypnosis is, or they had an experience working with a hypnotist with limited knowledge, skills and/or experience.  Most behavior modification and even pain management generally require only a light state of hypnosis.
